Wisconsin drops third straight

The Badger women's hockey team has lost three consecutive contests


After opening the season with four straight nonconference wins, Wisconsin's women's hockey team has opened the WCHA season 0-3.

The Badgers outshot Ohio State 36-18 but fell 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison, dropping their third consecutive home conference game.

The Buckeyes earned their first win of the season and moved to 1-4-0 in the WCHA and overall. Ohio State opened the season with with four consecutive losses to top-ranked Minnesota and three-time defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth.

Ohio State led Saturday's game from the very beginning. Just eight seconds into the first period, Buckeye Heather Farrell beat Badger netminder Meghan Horras to give Ohio State the early 1-0 lead. The teams settled down from there, but Ohio State moved out to a 2-0 lead with a goal from Jaclyn Haines just one minute and 17 seconds into the second period.

Just five and a half minutes later, Wisconsin captain Carla MacLeod set up sophomore forward Sharon Cole's power-play goal to draw the Badgers within 2-1.

Ohio State, though, answered with less than four minutes left in the second period when Tessa Bonhomme tallied a power play goal.

The Badgers took the majority of the shots from start to finish and really poured it on in the third period, outshooting Ohio State 15-1. Buckeye goaltender Melissa Glaser, though, was very strong in net. Glaser made 14 saves in the third period, finally yielding a goal with just 16 seconds left in the game when Molly Engstrom found the net for Wisconsin.

The Badgers and Buckeyes take to the ice again Sunday at 2:05 in the Kohl Center. Fans can skate with the Badgers following the game.
