Volleyball: NCAA Tournament first round – Wisconsin vs. Arizona in College Station, Texas. Possible second round match – Wisconsin vs. Nicholls State/Texas A&M winner.


Wisconsin was expecting to host the first round after a pair of wins over the weekend against Indiana and Purdue. The tournament selection committee, though, bypassed Wisconsin as a host site but granted the Badgers an opening-round tournament date against Arizona. Wisconsin finished fourth in the Big Ten at 13-7 and were 21-10 overall.

The name of the game has been defense and the Badgers are 3-0 after home wins over Eastern Illinois and Rutgers last week. The team faces its sternest test of the season Tuesday night with a road date in Maryland (3-0) for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge before returning home to take on Detroit (1-1).

The Badgers won the Conesto/Coconut Grove Thanksgiving Classic in Miami with wins over Hampton and Butler. Wisconsin did it with defense, holding its opponents to 42 points per game in the victories, the first two in Lisa Stone's tenure at Wisconsin.

The Badgers winning ways continued with two big victories over Michigan and Michigan State in the College Hockey Showcase over the weekend. Wisconsin now holds a 10-game unbeaten streak and finished November undefeated.

Wisconsin takes the ice against the three-time defending national champions after sweeping St. Cloud State two weekends ago. The Badgers (7-3-0 WCHA, 11-3-0 overall) matchup with the Bulldogs (4-2-0, 8-4-0) will be its only contests in more than a month. Wisconsin's next action following this weekend will take place in Long Beach, Calif., Jan. 10-11 against Northeastern.

Fresh off a pair of dual match victories over the weekend, the Badgers (3-0-0) hit the road four a quartet of matches in a two-day span. No. 12 Penn and No. 11 Hofstra will provide formidable competition.
