The United States National Junior Team shut out its opponent in a major way Friday night, defeating Austria 8-0 in its first preliminary round game of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. Coached by Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves, the team outshot Austria 61-15.
In the scoring barrage, Badger freshman defender Jeff Likens assisted on a shorthanded goal by forward Patrick Eaves (Boston College) at 14:46 in the second period. Patrick Eaves, son of Mike Eaves, also had assist while forward Zach Parise (University of North Dakota) had a hat trick and an assist, with one goal in the second period and two in the third.
Team USA will play Slovakia in the Pool A Preliminary Round Dec. 28.
