Injuries to senior starting quarterback Jim Sorgi left redshirt freshman John Stocco under center in the waning moments of the 2003 season's final two games, a potential harbinger of things to come. Stocco will head into spring practices penciled in as the No. 1 quarterback for 2004, with junior Matt Schabert, freshman Tyler Donovan and verbal commit Sean Lewis (Oak Lawn, Ill.), who plans to enroll at UW for the spring semester, joining an open competition. Another expected incoming freshman, Bryan Savage (Haverford, Pa.), will join the fray in fall camp.

"(Quarterbacks) coach (Jeff) Horton always jokes around about that, ‘you guys keep starting quarterback controversy,'" Stocco said. "I'm really not the guy to ask about that."

Stocco completed 5 of 9 passes for 84 yards against Iowa then went 4-for-7 for 34 yards against Auburn.

"I'm just glad I got to get in there a little bit and get some experience," Stocco said.
