For the first time in the program's history, the Wisconsin women's hockey team won a home game against Minnesota-Duluth (10-8-2 overall, 6-5-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association). The Badgers (13-4-3, 9-4-1) scored four goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 victory over the three-time defending NCAA champs.
Senior forward Meghan Hunter had two goals and an assist while freshman forward Lindsay Macy had a goal and an assist and junior forward Jackie Friesen had two assists. Wisconsin's other goals came from senior forward Steph Millar and freshman forward Meaghan Mikkelson.
"It was a good team effort," coach Mark Johnson said. "Everybody made a contribution and the puck finally got in in the second period and it was nice to see. They weren't flukie-type goals. They were highlight-film goals. Hunter scored two beauties and Macy had a nice one, so it was nice to see the girls get rewarded because I think they were starting to get a little bit frustrated because of the way the last three games have gone and the way the puck hasn't gone in for us."
Millar tallied the game's first goal early less than three minutes into the match on a power play after UMD was called for body-checking. UMD responded with just 33 seconds left in the first period, as freshman defender Suvi Vacker fired the puck, which bounced off a Badger skate and past sophomore goaltender Meghan Horras, who had 26 saves.
Wisconsin had a scoring barrage in the second period, beginning with Hunter's first goal at 5:18. The Badgers continued to bombard UMD freshman goalie Ritta Schaublin, who had 24 saves. Macy followed Hunter's direction with a goal of her own. UMD closed the gap with a power play goal from junior forward Caroline Ouellette but Wisconsin reopened that gap with a goal from Mikkelson and another from Hunter.
