Colorado College scored two unanswered power play goals Saturday, snapping a seven-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association losing streak with a 3-1 win over Wisconsin. The defending conference champions took advantage of three consecutive Badger penalties in the third period that left Wisconsin a man down for nearly seven minutes of a nine-minute span.
With the loss, Wisconsin (15-7-6 overall, 9-4-5 WCHA) remains in a third-place tie with St. Cloud State (14-9-3, 10-7-3), which lost to Minnesota State 7-6. A win would have not only put the Badgers ahead of St. Cloud, it would have moved them within one point of first place after North Dakota's 2-1 loss to Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth's eighth consecutive win knotted up the Fighting Sioux and Bulldogs at 26 points apiece.
Colorado College (12-9-3, 5-9-2) senior wing Colin Stuart picked up the eventual game winner at the 14:22 mark in the third period and provided an assist to sophomore forward Brett Sterling less than two minutes later, sealing it for the Tigers.
Wisconsin had killed off four Tiger power plays before the dam broke, including a double-minor assessed to freshman defenseman Jeff Likens in the first period and a five-minute major given to sophomore forward Nick Licari at 7:20 in the third.
Just a minute-and-a-half after Licari's penalty time ended, though, freshman forward Ross Carlson was whistled for slashing, and Stuart capitalized, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Likens was called for high sticking with less than five minutes remaining, setting up Sterling's goal.
Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead early in the first period Robbie Earl's eighth goal of the season, but Tiger junior Curtis McElhinney stymied the Badgers with 30 saves.
Wisconsin junior netminder Bernd Bruckler finished with 31 saves in the loss.
