Badgers crush Mavericks

Women's hockey team within striking distance of first place after home win

Wisconsin easily defeated Minnesota State 3-0 and got an added bonus: the program's 100th all-time win. The Badgers are now 100-46-17 in their five-year history. In the present tense, the win pushed Wisconsin within two points of first-place Minnesota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The No. 2 Gophers lost a non-conference game to No. 1 Dartmouth Saturday.

Wisconsin (12-4-1 WCHA, 16-4-3 overall) sophomore goaltender Meghan Horras had 13 saves for her second career shutout while MSU senior goalie Shari Vogt had 29 saves. The Badgers also killed three MSU power plays throughout the evening, including one in which MSU did not take a shot against Horras and the Badgers.

Wisconsin's first of three goals came from junior forward Amy Vermeulen on a pass from junior defender Nicole Uliasz early in the second period. Midway through the second period, Wisconsin added another goal, this one from freshman forward Lindsay Macy on an assist from freshman forward Sara Bauer.

Wisconsin took advantage of a power play in the third period and senior forward Karen Rickard got her 10th goal of the season, as junior defender Carla MacLeod set her up with a pass from blue line.
