Volleyball picks team MVPs

Several volleyball players picked up postseason accolades at the team's annual banquet Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Lisa Zukowski won the For Inspiration, Guts, Hard work and Teamwork (FIGHT) award. After having knee surgery her sophomore year, Zukowski started her junior and senior year, ending her career with 921 digs, 11th on Wisconsin's all-time list.

Sophomore outside hitter Aubrey Meierotto picked up the award for Most Total Points, as she had a team-high 437 kills and was third with 30 service aces. She also had 19 solo blocks and 55 block assists.

Junior outside hitter Jill Odenthal earned Offensive Player of the Year, racking up 415 kills and a .307 hitting percentage. She was an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region and a 2003 All-Big Ten team selection.

Senior defensive specialist and libero Jill Maier walked on to the volleyball team as a freshman and worked her way up to receive Defensive Player of the Year and Academic Excellence honors for her work on and off the court. She had a team-leading 458 digs her senior year and was a two-time Athletic Board Scholar, with the highest cumulative grade point average on the team.

Sophomore middle blocker Sheila Shaw was chosen as the Best Blocker of 2003, racking up team highs in blocks (94) and hitting percentage (.313). She was second in the Big Ten, averaging .44 service aces a game.
