According to various news reports, Wisconsin football player Dwayne Smith, 19, and 22-year-old Anwar Jones, who is not a UW student, were charged with being party to the crime of second degree sexual assault in Dane County Circuit Court Wednesday.
The alleged assault of a 19-year-old woman took place in the downtown apartment of Jones' cousin, former Wisconsin football player Travann Hayes, a UW senior, following what Madison police have described as an underage drinking party hosted by Wisconsin football players. Smith is accused of assaulting the woman while Jones watched.
Smith was released Monday on signature bond. Jones was initially held on $2,000 cash bail following an initial bond hearing Monday. After a second bond hearing Tuesday, his bail was reduced to $1,000 and he was released late Wednesday afternoon.
Smith and Jones have initial hearings scheduled for March 4. If convicted, the two men could each face up to 40 years in prison.
