Wisconsin recruits advance in state hoops playoffs

Anderson, Ward will showcase skills at state tournament later this week; men's basketball, football recruits advance into boys' sectionals

Jolene Anderson, a 2004 Badger women's basketball recruit, scored 45 points Saturday night as South Shore (23-1) advanced to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 4 State Tournament with a 65-58 win over Owen-Withee. South Shore next faces Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah (18-7) at 10:45 a.m. Friday in a state semifinal. All girls state tournament games are held at the Alliant Energy Center (Dane County Coliseum) in Madison.

Danielle Ward ('04) scored 10 points Saturday as Milwaukee King (21-3) advanced to its first ever state tournament berth with a 48-35 when over Milwaukee Washington. King will play Oshkosh West (18-5) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Division 1 state quarterfinals.

Men's basketball '04 recruit Michael Flowers scored 17 Saturday as Madison La Follette advanced to a Division 1 boys sectional semifinal matchup with Watertown. Junior forward David DuBois paced the Lancers (10-11) with 28 in the 80-56 win over Madison East.

Greg Stiemsma and Randolph advanced to a Division 4 sectional semifinal with a 69-25 win over Oakfield.

Top-ranked Madison Memorial (21-0) trounced La Crosse Central 96-54 Saturday. Wesley Matthews Jr., one of the most highly recruited players in the Midwest, scored 14 in the win.

Wisconsin football recruit Nick Hayden scored eight points as Arrowhead (16-6) advanced to a Division 1 sectional semifinal with a 59-53 win over Waukesha West.

Andy Crooks, a 2004 football recruit, advanced to a Division 1 sectional semifinals with Wausau East, 73-67 winners over Lakeland.
