Wisconsin faced Ball State and Big Ten foe Iowa twice each
this weekend while at the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa. Both the Badgers
(18-13) and the Hawkeyes (18-14) each went 3-1 in the tournament, which preceded
the beginning of conference play next weekend.
Wisconsin defeated Iowa 2-1 in Sunday's tournament finale, thanks to a big play from freshman third baseman Athena Vasquez, who hit her first home run of her collegiate career. In the win, freshman pitcher Eden Brock allowed only one earned run and six hits, pitching a complete game and improving to 8-5.
Saturday, however, Wisconsin was not as fortunate, falling to Iowa 4-0 in the team's second game of the invite. Junior pitcher Katie Layne gave up four earned runs, eight hits and struck out two. Freshman Megan Smith relieved her and forced three pop-outs in the seventh inning. Iowa pitchers junior Lisa Birocci and sophomore Ali Arnold combined to allow only three hits.
Wisconsin had more success against Ball State, defeating the Cardinals 3-0 Saturday and 6-1 Sunday. Brock pitched her fourth career shutout and gave up six hits while striking out four Saturday. Sunday, the Badgers had big plays from junior shortstop Kris Zacher, who had three hits, as well as junior outfielder Natalie Phillips, who had a home run, while coasting to the win. Freshman outfielder Sam Polito and Vasquez each scored twice.
Sophomore Sara Gonzales pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four.
