Bairu earns Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors

Sophomore Simon Bairu was named the Big Ten men's outdoor track and field co-athlete of the week for his performance at the Stanford Invitational last weekend where he earned an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 28:28.69 in the 10,000 meter run. His time now ranks second on both the NCAA qualifying list and on UW's school record list. Arizona's Robert Cheseret won the event in 28:25.62.

Rowing starts season ranked fifth in nation
The men's varsity eight rowing team will start the season at No. 5 in the U.S. Rowing Collegiate preseason poll, tied with Brown University. Both teams collected 184 points. Harvard, the defending national champs in the event, is the top-ranked team with 258 points.

Wisconsin will open its season in Madison April 10, facing No. 12 Oregon State and No. 13 Michigan.

26 Badgers make All-Academic team

Twenty-six student-athletes were honored not for their accomplishments on the field but in the classroom. These athletes made the Big Ten Winter Academic All-Conference Teams, which consists of students with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better who are in at least their second academic year. The women's swimming team had eight recipients, the most of any Wisconsin women's sports team that competes in the Big Ten. The men's basketball team had the fewest, with two.
