Gonzales' pitching, balanced offense propel Wisconsin to 6-2 win

Four runs in the fourth inning boosted Wisconsin to a 6-2 win over Northern Iowa Thursday evening in Cedar Falls, Iowa.


The Badgers (26-21) outhit UNI 11-4 and all of Wisconsin's batters reached base at least once in the trouncing. Junior catcher Boo Gillette helped lead the Badgers offense with two hits and an RBI. Six different players drove in runs for Wisconsin and six different players scored the team's runs.


Sophomore pitcher Sara Gonzales improved to 3-2, tossing a complete game and giving up only four hits and two walks while striking out two.


Trailing 1-0 entering the fourth inning, Wisconsin rallied for a 4-1 lead. Senior left fielder Diana Consolmagno began the spurt with a walk and moved to second on a Panther balk. Freshman second baseman Tara Hamilton added a single and then sophomore first baseman Kaitlin Reiss drove a single down the right field line to score Consolmagno. After junior right fielder Natalie Phillips walked to load the bases, freshman centerfielder Sam Polito hit a sacrifice fly to left field  to score freshman pinch runner Nicole Simmons. Freshman third baseman Athena Vasquez then singled to left to score Reiss and junior shortstop Kris Zacher drove Phillips home with a sacrifice fly.  


Vazquez scored again in the sixth inning, this time on Gillette's RBI-single.


Northern Iowa (10-29) scored its other run in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore shortstop Rachael Rogers singled and brought in junior third baseman Erin Strellner.


Wisconsin had the last laugh, however, as junior designated hitter Anastasia Miller scored in the seventh on a Phillips' single.
