Ohio linebacker drawing big-time attention

Eric Tupta of Gates Mills (Oh.) Gilmour Academy is one of Northeast Ohio's most talented defensive players.

Linebacker Eric Tupta comes from a small school in Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, but the big colleges are paying attention.

"I don't have any offers in writing," he said. "Ohio U just called and was talking about an offer.

"Since May 1, I have had 17 schools call and 12 came in the school. Boston College, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Ohio State have all been in."

Tupta (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) is a versatile player but he prefers middle linebacker.

"I play in the middle and that's where I prefer to play," he said. "I always played defensive end before but last year was my first year inside.

"I play running back on offense. I had 700 yards rushing sharing time. We run the run-and-shoot."

Tupta traveled to the Nike Combine at Penn State and also has his summer camp plans set.

"I was at Notre Dame the week of the Ohio State combine, that's why I didn't go there," he said. "I'll be at West Virginia May 22, Ohio State senior camp, Notre Dame senior camp, Northwestern senior camp, and Boston College."

What will be the key factors in his decision?

"Playing time is major important," he said. "Where they want me to play is important."

Tupta is also busy running track.

"I took first in the conference in the shot," he said. "I am running the (400 relay). I have run an 11.3 split. I am just now trying to find my form. I'm 230 right now."

Tupta took the SAT May 1. He is a fine student and hopes to be a business major. He is looking forward to the season to try and redeem last year's disappointing finish.

"We were ranked second in the state and lost in round one," he said. "We were looking ahead and they took advantage of it. We lost by a touchdown."
