Men's hockey announces captains

Junior Adam Burish will where the "C" while Bernd Bruckler and Tom Gilbert will serve as assistant captains

Junior forward Adam Burish will captain the Wisconsin men's hockey team, while senior goaltender Bernd Bruckler and junior defenseman Tom Gilbert will serve as assistant captains for the 2004–05 season, head coach Mike Eaves announced Friday. The captains were determined by a team vote.

After enduring an injury-shortened freshman campaign, Burish scored 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) last season, tied for seventh on the team. One of six Badgers to compete in all 43 games for the UW in 2003–04, he skated as one of the UW's top penalty killers and face-off men. Named the team's winner of the 2004 Fenton Kelsey, Jr., Most Competitive Player Award, Burish joins Chan Young (co-captain - 1964–65), Peter Johnson (co-captain - 1981–82), Rob Andringa (co-captain - 1990–91) and Barry Richter (1992–93) as Madison natives who have captained the Badgers.

First-team All-American Bernd Bruckler joins Gary Johnson (co-captain - 1966–67), Duane Derksen (assistant - 1991–92) and Kirk Daubenspeck (assistant - 1996–97) as Badger goaltenders to wear a captain's letter on their jersey. Bruckler posted one of the greatest seasons in UW goaltending annals last year with a 2.09 goals-against average and .924 save percentage, both tops on the UW single-season list. He set the UW record with a 15-game unbeaten streak (10-0-5) and tied the school mark with four shutouts during a season. He finished with a 19-10-8 record and completed the season by earning the 2004 NCAA East Regional's Most Outstanding Player award. A four-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association player of the week, he was named the CSTV/Hockey Commissioners' Association Player of the Month in February, and was also named a national defensive player of the week during the month. Currently second on the UW career charts with a 2.51 save percentage and .916 save percentage, Bruckler was voted the Spike Carlson MVP Award winner by his teammates.

Wisconsin's top returning offensive threat from the blue line, Tom Gilbert collected 15 assists and 21 points for sixth on the Badgers in scoring last season. Second on the team with four power-play tallies last year, he currently leads active Badgers with 28 career assists, ranks second with 41 career points and third with 13 career goals. Gilbert's appointment marks the second straight season a UW defenseman will serve in a leadership role. Last season, senior blue liners Dan Boeser and Andy Wozniewski joined senior win Rene Bourque as tri-captains.

Burish, Bruckler and Gilbert make their debuts as captains for Wisconsin, along with the rest of the Badgers on Friday, Oct. 15. The Badgers open their 2004–05 season that night at the Kohl Center against Mercyhurst.
