Vandenheuvel hopes to decide early

Hudson, Wis., offensive tackle has one scholarship offer

Eric Vandenheuvel, a massive offensive tackle from Hudson, Wis., wants to make his college decision pretty soon.

"Before the high school football season," the 6-foot-7, 335-pounder said of his timetable for a decision. "Probably some time early August."

Vandenheuvel has only one scholarship offer, so if his August decision holds other interested schools will need to bring an offer to the table soon.

Vandenheuvel said his favorite right now is "probably Wisconsin… since they've shown the most interest in me and they offered after camp. It's close, it's a great school, it's got a great football program—what's not to like? So they are probably on the top of the list right now."

After the Badgers, Vandenheuvel said Minnesota and Notre Dame are neck-and-neck for his No. 2 slot. He is also receiving regular interest from Iowa, Northern Illinois and North Dakota State.

"I'm not really expecting (any other offers soon) but I am keeping in touch with the U of M," Vandenheuvel said. He added that he plans to call Minnesota interior line coach Gordon Shaw, who has been recruiting him for the Gophers, in the next couple days.

Wisconsin offensive line coach Jim Hueber is recruiting Vandenheuvel for the Badgers, while Notre Dame defensive line coach Greg Mattison is handling this recruit for the Irish.

Vandenheuvel carries a 3.6 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at Hudson and has scored a 26 on his ACT.
