Omole makes finals at World Junior Championships, Jones leads Wisconsin State Amateur

Omole makes finals at World Junior Championships Sophomore Demi Omole demonstrated his speed on the world stage Tuesday at the World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy. The UW sprinter won his heat in the preliminaries and placed a close second in the semifinals to advance to the finals in the 100-meter dash.

Omole won his preliminary heat in 10.45 seconds before knocking more than two tenths of a second off his time later in the day. He and Antigua's Daniel Bailey both finished in 10.19 seconds in the semifinals but Bailey was given the first-place finish. The finals will be held Wednesday.

Omole will participate in the 400 relay Saturday and Sunday. He recently won the 100 meters at the USA Junior Championships in a wind-aided 10.14 and claimed the Big Ten Outdoor Championship in the same event in May.

Jones in first place after two days at Wisconsin State Amateur

Garrett Jones, a sophomore-to-be with the Wisconsin golf team, is winning the Wisconsin State Golf Association's State Amateur Competition after two days of the four-day event. The championship takes place at The Bog in Saukville, Wis.

Jones shot a 69 Monday and a 74 Tuesday for a total of 143, one stroke under par. The Rewey, Wis., native is competing with the House on the Rock Resort Original 18 club. He had eight birdies over the course of two days but also had four bogeys and shot a seven on a par-4 hole.

Matt Behm, competing with Janesville Riverside, is one stroke behind Jones, claiming second place.
