Hernandez and Mania grab academic All-America awards

Adam Mania and Sarah Hernandez, both swimmers with the UW swimming and diving team, earned academic All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Emily Carpenter, a junior swimmer, earned an honorable mention.

Mania is a senior swimmer who is competing in the Olympics with Poland while Hernandez is a junior who competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials but did not make the U.S. team. This is the first award for both athletes.

In order to be eligible, an athlete must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher either cumulatively, in the present semester or in the year; in addition, the athlete must compete at the NCAA, NAIA or JC Swimming and Diving Championships and be academically eligible according to NCAA regulations.

Carpenter earned an honorable mention award because she had a "B" standard time for the NCAA Championships and did not qualify for the NCAA Championships.
