Closing time

The clock is ticking on Eric Vandenheuvel's college decision

With time running down before Hudson (Wis.) High School's football practices begin, offensive tackle prospect Eric Vandenheuvel is primed to clear his mind and make his decision.

"I probably think I'm going to be a Badger before I start the high school season and I'm going to have that behind me and I'm just going to have to go out there, kick some ass," Vandenheuvel said.

However, the 6-foot-7, 330-pound athlete is going to wait a little while longer before he pulls the trigger.

"I think I'm going to make a decision probably in the next coming couple of weeks," he said. "Like I said, before the season starts up."

Wisconsin is the only school that has offered Vandenheuvel a scholarship. He is keeping in touch with, and still considering, Minnesota and Notre Dame, however.

"Minnesota's real close," Vandenheuvel said. Hudson is just 25 miles east of the Twin Cities campus, compared to some 240 miles northwest of Madison. "I also think their football program is coming up. Also it has a good med school. It's what I was thinking of going into."

As for Notre Dame, Vandenheuvel cited the school's academic prestige as the primary reason he was considering the Irish.

However, each of those schools wants to wait later than Vandenheuvel's stated pre-prep-season time frame.

"They've been staying stuff like they want to see a senior film but I'd just like to take the Wisconsin (offer) before that," he said.

Vandenheuvel said he is not necessarily waiting on a Minnesota or Notre Dame scholarship to come through.

"I'd be very happy with going to Wisconsin," he said. "It's a great school, it's got a great football program. It's close to home. I have a lot of friends that have graduated and have gone there already too."
