Penney leads New Zealand win; Big Ten Foreign Tour falls; Smith advances to B finals at Olympics

Penney leads New Zealand to upset win

Former Badger guard Kirk Penney helped his native New Zealand earn its first win Thursday in the form of a 90-87 upset of Serbia-Montenegro. Penney contributed a team-high 15 points in the win that saw the Kiwis come from 13 down with 5:30 remaining to stun the defending world champions.

Penney also had five points in New Zealand's 69-62 loss to China Tuesday.

Big Ten Foreign Tour drops final games

The Big Ten Foreign Tour Team fell in its final two games of the two-country, five-game stand. The Big Ten team first fell to UCC Assigelo 95-93 on a buzzer-beater Wednesday in Casalpusterlengo, Italy. Thursday, the Big Ten team was defeated by the Cremona Basketball Club 80-74 in Cremona, Italy.
Badger senior forward Clayton Hanson collected nine points and six rebounds in Wednesday's loss and 11 points and six rebounds in Thursday's loss.

The Big Ten Foreign Tour Team ended its swing through Europe with a 3-2 record.

Former rower makes B finals in Greece

Matt Smith, a former Badger men's rower, will participate in the B finals of the men's lightweight four at the Olympic Games after placing sixth in his semifinal heat Thursday. His boat finished in 6:01.84 on the 2,000-meter course while Italy won the semifinal in 5:55.02.

Smith and his boat will compete in the B finals Aug. 21, which will determine the seventh through 12th-place finishers.
