Northwestern takes down Badgers in OT
Junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen kept the Wisconsin women's soccer team (6-1-2, 0-1-2 Big Ten) in the Badgers' match against Northwestern in Evanston Friday but the Badgers could not capitalize and Northwestern won 2-1 in overtime.
Northwestern junior midfielder/forward Tabitha Lowey scored the Wildcats' first goal 34 minutes into the game and Vermeulen tied the score early in the second half on a penalty shot, which was granted after she was tripped by Northwestern sophomore goalie Whitney Jones.
The game went into overtime, where Wildcat senior defender/midfielder Carolyn Hack knocked the goal past freshman goalie Lynn Murray at 96:15 to grab the win for the Wildcats. Murray had two saves in the net and Jones had four.
"We did not come out to meet the battle at hand, especially in the first half," head coach Dean Duerst said. "We had numerous chances to put the game away, but we just couldn't convert."
Men's soccer falls to IUPUI
The men's soccer team could not get past Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis (6-1 overall) Friday night in Madison, as the Jaguars defeated the Badgers (3-4) 2-1.
IUPUI scored both its goals early in the first half, with one from sophomore midfielder Adrian Conrad at 12:32 and the other from junior Nic Wedig at 18:29. Wisconsin's goal, meanwhile came late in the second period, as senior forward Jed Hohlbein knocked one in on an assist from freshman midfielder Erik Ortega at 86:24.
IUPUI goaltender Peter Brasovan had five saves while Wisconsin senior netminder Eric Hanson had three.
"I didn't feel that we had the energy and urgency early on that we should have, and it cost us," said head coach Jeff Rohrman. "It was much too reactive for this team, so we have to turn it around and get going in the right direction pretty quickly."
