Freshmen corners ready if necessary

Allen Langford and Jack Ikegwuonu had expected to play in their first seasons on campus

Wisconsin has not yet needed true freshman cornerbacks Allen Langford and Jack Ikegwuonu. Strong, and healthy, performances from veteran starters Scott Starks and Brett Bell and top reserve Chuckie Cowans have kept the Badgers' touted youngsters off the field.

Langford and Ikegwuonu were impressive in their first fall training camp and reaped plaudits from the Badger coaching staff. They also earned the honor of staying off the scout team as true freshmen.

Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez and defensive backs coach Ron Lee intimated on numerous occasions during fall camp that they expected the duo to play immediately. Currently, however, both Langford and Ikegwuonu are redshirting. That could still change but with each passing week the chances that the redshirts will stick grows progressively stronger.

Langford and Ikegwuonu, however, have remained in the depth and continue to work out with the second-team defense.

"They are playing well and they're in every meeting and they are going with the other twos," Lee said. "If something happens they've got to be ready. It is not something where they say, ‘well, well are just going to put it in the back pocket until next year.' They are going to stay with it. If their number is called, their number is called. They've got to be ready to go."
