Women's soccer earns first Big Ten win; women's cross country struggles; Kasarov loses at ITA

Badgers pick up first conference win

After a four-game winless drought, the women's soccer team (7-3-1 overall, 1-3-1 Big Ten) won its first Big Ten game, defeating Purdue 1-0 in West Lafayette Friday afternoon.

Junior midfielder/forward Katy Lindenmuth scored the game-winner at 9:12 in the game, her fourth goal of the season.

Wisconsin freshman goaltender Lynn Murray collected six saves while Purdue netminders Lauren Mason and Maureen Carey had three and one save, respectively. Purdue outshot Wisconsin 12-8 but could not get a goal.

"We needed to win this game to have a chance to finish in the upper half of the conference," head coach Dean Duerst said. "There are still plenty of Big Ten games left, but this was basically a must-win for us because of our slow start (in league play). Now we need to build on this victory."

Cross country stumbles to finish line at Notre Dame Invitational

The women's cross country team finished 20th out of 24 teams at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday in South Bend.

Sophomore Katrina Rundhaug was the top finisher for Wisconsin, placing 24th in 17:27. Junior ‘A Havahla Haynes was the only other Badger to finish in the top 100; she finished 51st in 17:48. Wisconsin accumulated 473 points while winner Stanford finished with 34 points, followed by No. 6 Michigan, with 84 points.

"The overall results of today's race are not pleasing, but our team is young and learning to run at an elite level," head coach Jim Stintzi said. "I think that Katrina and ‘A Havahla are making great progress."
