Women's team pulls out key win, men's squad loses heartbreaker

Women clinch Big Ten Tournament berth with 1-0 win.

The Wisconsin women's soccer team defeated Michigan State (8-7-1 overall, 2-6-1 Big Ten) 1-0 Friday night in Madison to earn a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. Wisconsin moved to 10-4-1 and 4-4-1.


Freshman goaltender Lynn Murray earned her third shutout of the season and collected six saves against Michigan State.

"This game had the flavor and feel of a Big Ten tournament game," head coach Dean Duerst said. "It was a great win, and it takes pressure off us."

Hoosiers slip by Badgers 1-0

The No. 3 Indiana men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin (5-7-0 overall, 1-2-0 Big Ten) 1-0 Friday night in Bloomington, Ind., with the Hoosiers (9-2-1, 4-0) notching the game-winner six minutes into the first half.

Indiana's John Michael Hayden kicked Indiana's lone goal, which got past Wisconsin goaltender Eric Hanson. Hanson finished with six saves while Indiana goaltender Jay Nolly finished with three. Wisconsin senior forward Nick Van Sicklen finished with a team-high two shots on goal.
