Monty, Cooper share UW defensive award

Reserve defensive ends have faced an increased load due to injuries among starting cast

They did not light up the stat sheet but defensive ends Joe Monty and Jamal Cooper played well Saturday against Minnesota, providing a lift as star Erasmus James continues to recuperate from an ankle injury.

Monday, Cooper and Monty were named the Badgers' co-defensive players of the week.

With James limited to five plays Saturday, Monty started at left defensive end for the second consecutive week. Cooper served in his usual role as a reserve end and rotated in particularly in passing situations. Monty managed four tackles. Cooper had one, when he corralled Jakari Wallace for a 12-yard loss in the fourth quarter.

On the year, Monty has 13 tackles and one sack. Cooper has 14 tackles, including five for loss and two sacks.
