Kempner, Theus taking advantage of opportunity

Cougars getting second chance in playoffs

Postseason prospects looked bleak for University of Wisconsin verbal commit receiver T.J. Theus and his Kempner (Sugar Land, Texas) teammates just a few weeks ago. The Cougars and two other District 20-5A teams had been forced to forfeit two games as the result of an administrative misinterpretation of a credit-hour guideline. The forfeits dropped Kempner's league record to a mere 2-4.

The Cougars did their part, though, and received the help they needed to qualify for the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time in school history. First they dispatched with Dulles, 28-9, then FB Marshall, 53-10, in successive weeks. Clements' 24-20 win over Fort Bend Austin then boosted Kempner into the postseason.

One of Kempner's star performers, Theus shined in an opening-round win last Saturday, catching three passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in 21-10 victory over Cinco Ranch. Theus now has 36 catches for 507 yards and three touchdowns this year.

The Cougars take on Cypress Falls Saturday night.
