Badger women shut out Mavericks

Wisconsin has 21-game unbeaten streak against MSU-Mankato

The Wisconsin women's hockey team stormed into Minnesota State-Mankato Friday night, posting a 4-0 shut out at the All Seasons Arena in Mankato.

Although Wisconsin (12-4-1 overall, 8-4-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) could not get the puck past sophomore netminder Laura Brennan in the first period, the Badgers took several opportunities, out-shooting Mankato (3-9-3, 3-7-3) 14-10.

The Badgers found what they were looking for just 50 seconds into the second period, when senior defenseman Molly Engstrom took a pass from senior forward Jackie Friesen and fired it into the net for Wisconsin's first goal.

But the Badgers waited until the third period to add insurance to their lead. Sophomore forward Meaghan Mikkelson scored almost four minutes into the third for Wisconsin's second goal, while freshman forward Jinelle Zaugg gave Wisconsin a 3-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 9:32. Finally, sophomore forward Lindsay Macy scored a power play goal with 1:15 left on the clock to seal the win for the Badgers.

Wisconsin junior goaltender Meghan Horras stopped 11 shots for her third shutout of the year, while Brennan collected 29 saves and gave up four goals.
