Women's tennis: mixed results at Wildcat Duals

Wisconsin opens season with singles and doubles play in Evanston, Ill.

The University of Wisconsin women's tennis team competed at the Wildcat Duals in Evanston, Ill., over the weekend, facing Illinois-Chicago, Penn State and host Northwestern, one of the top teams in the country.

The Badgers faced Illinois-Chicago in doubles play and Penn State in singles and doubles Friday. Although the results of the event are not counted on a team's record due to the manner in which the event is played, individual wins and losses are counted toward an individuals' records.

UW swept the doubles competition against UIC, picking up a win from its top duo, No. 27 seniors Katie McGaffigan and Lindsay Martin.

In singles competition against the Nittany Lions, Badgers No. 99 sophomore Caitlin Burke, sophomore Kaylan Caiati, freshman Chelsea Nusslock and junior Lexi Goldin all recorded wins, while No. 53 McGaffigan and Martin both fell to their opponents.

Wisconsin's No. 4 and No. 5 doubles teams, the only tandems to compete against PSU, recorded wins.

Saturday, the Badgers faced No. 5 Northwestern, which boasts the top-ranked singles player in the nation in Audra Cohen. McGaffigan battled Cohen but was quickly defeated 6-0 and 6-0.

Burke, playing at the Badgers' second spot, fell to fourth-ranked Cristelle Grier 6-0 and 6-1. Caiati, competing in flight four, defeated Andrea Yung 4-6, 6-1 and 6-1, while redshirt freshman Nicole Beck won 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 6 spot.

Wisconsin struggled in doubles play, losing both of its matches to Wildcat duos.

Sunday, the Badgers recovered from tough hits from Northwestern and swept UIC in singles competition. McGaffigan defeated Iris Jaklin 6-3, 6-7 and 6-1, while Martin, Caiati, Beck, Burke and Nusslock all picked up wins.
