Women's hockey: UW stifles Mavericks

Badger netminder Meghan Horras posts seventh shutout of season

The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team kept Minnesota State (8-13-6 overall, 7-11-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) out of the net Saturday afternoon as the Badgers defeated the Mavericks 3-0 at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin's defenders blocked 10 shots and only allowed 14 shots on goal, all of which were denied by junior netminder Meghan Horras. Minnesota State freshman goalie Brit Kehler stopped 32 shots on goal but allowed three.

Badger senior forward Jackie Friesen scored the game-winner at 16:15 in the second period, while Wisconsin (19-7-1, 13-7-1) was on the power play.

Junior forward Cyndy Kenyon and sophomore forward Lindsay Macy scored the team's second and third goals.

A rematch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Sunday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers, though, will be without sophomores defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar and forward Meghan Mikkelson, who will compete with Canada's U-22 team at the Air Canada Cup Feb. 10-12 in Germany.
