Matt Shaughnessy Q&A

Norwich, Conn., two-star defensive end – prospect profile

Wisconsin's class of 2005 features a handful of players with the potential to be solid pass rushers, including Norwich Free Academy's Matt Shaughnessy. A 6-foot-6, 230-pound defensive end, Shaughnessy was an all-state selection and a SuperPrep All-American.

Shaughnessy verbally committed to Wisconsin in December, less than two weeks after a Dec. 3-5 official visit to Madison. He also considered UConn, Boston College and Purdue.

Badger Nation: What is your favorite memory from your official visit?

Matt Shaughnessy: "My favorite memory was hanging out with my host Joe Walker."

BN: What are you most proud of/best memory from prep career?

MS: "My best memory was getting to the state semi-finals game when I was a sophomore. This year was a little disappointing; we didn't win as many games as we thought we would. I think our record was 4-6."

BN: What was your favorite team growing up? Why?

MS: "Patriots. It was before they were big and they had Drew Bledsoe and Ben Coates and Curtis Martin and they were building."

BN: Who was your favorite athlete? Why?

MS: "Bubba Smith. He was a good defensive lineman and I always watch Police Academy."

BN: Do you anticipate redshirting your first year at UW? What are your goals for your Badger career both for this year and in seasons to come?

MS: "I'm not sure. I think it all depends on how I do when I get there. I think the coaches said they will talk it over with me and see what my parents have to say. My goals are just to get better and hopefully start and have a role on the team."

BN: When do you expect to arrive on campus?

MS: "Sometime after the 4th of July."

BN: Do you have an academic discipline in mind for college?

MS: "I don't know yet, criminal justice looks pretty good but things change."

[Shaughnessy should qualify with a 930 SAT and a 2.4 grade-point average.]

BN: Where do you think you will be in 10 years?

MS: "Oh I don't know, somewhere where it's nice and hot, California or Miami. I don't know if it will be for playing football."
