Poll roundup: Subtle changes

Men's hoops, women's hockey feel slight adjustment in rankings; men's hockey jumps up in Pairwise

The University of Wisconsin men's basketball team checks in at No. 20 in both the latest Associated Press poll and USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll, both released Monday afternoon.

The Badgers split a pair of games last week, coming from behind to beat Iowa 72-69 at home, then losing to No. 1 Illinois 70-59 on the road. UW (16-6 overall, 7-4 Big Ten) was stagnant in the AP poll, but actually moved up one spot in the coaches' rankings.

UW plays one game this week: a home date with Michigan (12-13, 3-8) Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Central

Illinois (25-0, 11-0) is the unanimous No. 1 in both polls, running its streak at the top of the rankings to 11 weeks.

The only other ranked Big Ten team is second-place Michigan State (17-4, 8-2), which comes in No. 10 in the coaches poll and No. 11 according to AP.

WCHA dominates men's hockey poll

The Wisconsin men's hockey team slipped two spots to No. 6 in the USCHO.com/CSTV poll after going 0-1-1 in a weekend series at then-No. 3 Denver. However, the Badgers (20-8-2 overall, 15-6-1 WCHA) moved up six spots to No. 7 in the more important Pairwise rankings, which mimic the NCAA's selection criteria.

Led by the Pioneers the WCHA continues to dominate the USCHO.com poll and the Pairwise rankings. Denver (21-6-2, 16-4-2), the defending national champion, moved up to No. 1 in the USCHO.com poll and in the Pairwise standings.

Wisconsin's opponent at the Kohl Center this weekend, Colorado College (24-5-3, 17-5-2), is No. 2 in the Pairwise and No. 3 in the human poll.

Minnesota (20-12-1, 13-10-1), the Badgers' home opponent two weekends ago, is tied for third in the Pairwise and is No. 10 according to USCHO.com.

After this weekend, the Badgers will travel to face North Dakota (15-12-3, 10-11-1), which is tied for No. 10 in the Pairwise and is No. 15 in the USCHO.com ranking.

Women's hockey at No. 4

The Wisconsin women's hockey team remained No. 4 in the USCHO.com poll after sweeping Ohio State over the weekend. The Badgers (22-7-1 overall, 15-7-1 WCHA) are ranked No. 5 in the Pairwise.

The WCHA is also dominating the women's rankings. Minnesota (27-1-2, 22-0-2) and Minnesota-Duluth (21-3-2, 23-3-2) are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in each ranking.

Ohio State (14-14-2, 11-14-1) is unranked in the USCHO.com top 10, but is No. 11 in the Pairwise.
