Tegenkamp Big Ten Athlete of the Week

Accolade comes after senior runner breaks own record in 5,000 meters

Wisconsin senior track star Matt Tegenkamp is continuing to reap the benefits of his performance in the 5,000 meter run, a race he won last Saturday at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.

Tegenkamp, who set a new school and conference record of 13 minutes, 36.48 seconds in the 5,000, was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week Tuesday. Tegenkamp currently holds the country's fastest time in the 5,000 and has automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship.

Tegenkamp also set a school record in the 3,000 meters Feb. 5 at the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame. His new time of 7:51.75 seconds is an NCAA automatic qualifying time and bests his own personal record of 7.55.14, set last season.

Teammate sophomore sprinter Demi Omole earned the Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor Feb. 1.
