UW showing more interest in Mayberry

Hinsdale, Ill., class of 2006 running back/safety prospect is one to watch

One of the top prospects that attended the Scout.com All-American Combine in Champaign was Hinsdale (Ill.) South athlete Matt Mayberry. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder made a trip down south for yet another combine against some of the toughest competition in the country.

"I went down to Athens (Georgia) for a combine on Saturday," Mayberry said.

"The competition at this combine was incredible and I thought I did pretty well. I worked out with the running backs during one-on-one drills and got the chance to compare myself to guys like C.J. Spiller and Bo Harris.

"I thought I held my own. I ran a 4.54 40-yard dash. I had a 32-inch vertical leap and had 17 reps of 185-pounds on the bench."

Mayberry is a hot name right now in the Chicago area. Although there has not been a scholarship offer yet, schools such as Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Northwestern and Tennessee are all very interested.

"Coach (Bill) Lynch from Indiana saw my tape and immediately called me and said he'd be in school to talk to my coach this week. (Northwestern) Coach (Randy) Walker came in and said that they just need to make sure my academics are in order before offering me a scholarship.

"Wisconsin has started to send me more hand-written letters. The schools I like the most right now are Tennessee. I'd commit on the spot if they offered me. I also like Indiana, Northwestern, Maryland, Illinois and Wisconsin."

Mayberry has played fullback and linebacker for the Hornets the past two seasons. He'll be moving backward in 2005 on both sides of the ball as he'll be the starting tailback and safety for Hinsdale South.
