Illinois safety has seven favorites

Garrett Edwards has attended camps at Wisconsin and Illinois, two of his leaders. He boasts six scholarship offers

Garrett Edwards, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound class of 2006 safety prospect, from Downers Grove (Ill.) North, helped lead his team to a state championship as a junior. Edwards had several colleges call and stop by his school during the May evaluation period. He has several scholarship offers.

"I have offers from Illinois, Iowa State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Toledo," Edwards said.

"My coach told me that Purdue and Minnesota have both said that they would offer me a scholarship if I attended their camp," he added.

Who are Edwards favorites?

"My favorites are Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois and Iowa State," he said.

"Illinois and Iowa are at the top of my list right now," Edwards added. "My parents graduated from Iowa and my brother goes to school there right now….

"I camped at Wisconsin and Illinois. I plan on going to Purdue on July 30. The Illinois coaches want me to come back in July for a one-day camp and I might do that as well. I also might hit Notre Dame in July."

Edwards had a sensational junior year. He also quarterbacked for Downers Grove North and had 1,800 yards rushing and 900 yards passing. Edwards scored 26 touchdowns on the ground and had 16 passing touchdowns as well.

"Most all the schools that are recruiting me want me as a safety," Edwards said. "The MAC schools are saying quarterback or defensive back. I've even had schools tell me that I could be a wide receiver. I guess I'm being recruited as an athlete."

Edwards had one uncle who played his college football for Indiana and two great uncles that played college football at Illinois.

Edwards was named first-team all-state by the Champaign News-Gazette as a junior. He carries a 3.0 grade-point average in the classroom and scored a 20 on his ACT.
