Jones advances to USAPL quarterfinals

UW junior won two matches Thursday to advance

Garrett Jones, a junior golfer at the University of Wisconsin, won two matches at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships Thursday to advance to a Friday morning quarterfinal match against a fellow Big Ten golfer, Indiana senior Brad Marek.

The winner of the APL event traditionally receives an invitation to play in the following year's Masters at Augusta National. Marek and Jones were scheduled to tee of at 8 a.m. Friday at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio. The winner of that match would face the winner of the Clay Ogden/Michelle Wie match at 12:45 p.m.

Thursday, Jones, a native of Rewey, Wis., topped Jamie Miller (Silver Creek, N.Y.) 1 up, then defeated 40-year-old Royden Heirakuji (Makawao, Hawaii) 3 and 2.

Marek (Arlington Heights, Ill.) prevailed against Duke Butler (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) 4 and 3, then outlasted Nick Becker (Boise, Idaho) 3 and 1. In the previous round, Becker beat Marek's former Indiana teammate, Jeff Overton, 3 and 1.

If Jones wins two matches again Friday, he will play in Saturday's 36-hole championship match, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
