UW receives votes in coaches' poll

Badgers unranked for first time since 1996

Who says Wisconsin gets no respect? The Badger football team is on the outside looking in on the preseason USA Today top 25 coaches' poll for the first time in nearly a decade. However, UW did receive 79 points in the season's first poll, which would place the Badgers at No. 30 if the poll went out that far.

That is pretty healthy respect for a team that finished last season No. 18 in the poll after a 9-3 campaign, but must replace 14 starters this year. UW was ranked No. 22 prior to last season.

The last time UW was not among the top 25 in the preseason poll was 1996. The '95 Badgers finished 4-5-2, leading to the lowered expectations. But the '96 squad finished 8-5 and beat Utah in the Copper Bowl.

Four Big Ten teams grace the initial rankings: No. 4 Michigan (1,242 points), No. 9 Ohio State (1,033), No. 10 Iowa (1,014) and No. 16 Purdue (616).

Wisconsin was the top Big Ten team among the ‘others receiving votes' category, followed by Penn State (No. 33, 44 points), Minnesota (No. 35, 34 points) and Michigan State (No. 52, 6 points).

Bowling Green, Wisconsin's opponent for its Sept. 3 home opener, received 63 points, the 32nd highest total.
