In-state commits top 2005 Gridiron Guide list

Three UW verbal commitments and two potential recruits make up top five

The University of Wisconsin football team's three in-state commitments for the class of 2006, as well as two other student-athletes the Badgers are recruiting, are the top five Wisconsin high school seniors, according to the 2005 Gridiron Guide.

UW 2006 verbal commitment Jake Bscherer, a 6-foot-7, 275-pound offensive tackle from Sturgeon Bay, is ranked No. 2 on the guide's list, while Monona Grove High School standout Gabe Carimi, another Badger verbal commitment, is right behind him at No. 3. Wisconsin's third in-state commitment, Kirk DeCremer, a defensive end and tight end from Verona, is No. 5.

Milwaukee King wide receiver and linebacker Lance Kendricks is rated the top player in the state, according to the Gridiron Guide, and Keven Hagans, a wide receiver from Franklin, is the fourth-best player. Both are being recruited by Wisconsin.

St. Francis halfback Jason McClelland and Hartland Arrowhead defensive end Jason Jankowski, two seniors Wisconsin is recruiting, are ranked No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

Also on the list are offensive tackle Mitch Lederman (No. 8), a Brodhead-Juda senior who has verbally committed to Duke, and Ben Fischer (No. 11), a Wausau East wide receiver and defensive back who has been offered a scholarship by Minnesota.

According to, Bscherer is a four-star prospect nationally, while Carimi and DeCremer are two-star prospects. Kendricks and Hagans are each three-star prospects.
