Fall camp report: Aug. 22 PM

News and notes from the Badgers' Monday afternoon practice

The University of Wisconsin football team practiced for close to two hours Monday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium.

  • During team work Monday afternoon, the second-team linebackers were Travis Beckum at sam, Elijah Hodge at mike and DeAndre Levy at will. But that trio again moved to the scout team when the Badgers began working on preparation for Bowling Green. It appears that Beckum, Hodge and Levy are being groomed for spots in the depth, but that UW is more comfortable with having more seasoned, though still youthful, linebackers, such as Casey Hogan and Ben Landgraf, in the depth for the opener.
  • UW continues to take it easy with Brett Bell during the second practice of a two-a-day, and the trickle down effect from that Monday gave Ben Strickland reps with the second defense. He responded in a big way, with three pass breakups and an interception during team work.
  • As he did during Monday's morning practice, Roderick Rogers double shifted, playing free safety with the first defense and cornerback with the second defense. Second-team free safety Zach Hampton also spent some time at cornerback and spelled Rogers a little at free safety with the first defense.
  • Second-team quarterback Tyler Donovan showed off his footwork and quickness, evading a strong pass rush on several occasions. During a red zone drill he might have scored from 14 yards out had the whistle not blown as he reached the 3-yard-line.
  • During 7-on-7 work, strong safety Johnny White nearly made an acrobatic interception as John Stocco attempted to complete a pass along the sideline.
  • Marcus Randle El made a great catch along the sideline, going up to snag a pass from Dustin Sherer despite getting hit by Roderick Rogers and Joe Stellmacher.
  • Randle El continues to have an excellent camp. He also made a noteworthy catch along the sideline on a pass from John Stocco.
  • Brandon White had a good practice, but after one reception Zach Hampton wrestled the ball out of his hands for what probably would have been ruled a catch and a fumble. White recovered the loose ball, though.
  • Joe Monty made a series of plays during 11-on-11 work. First he had a practice sack on Tyler Donovan. Then he tracked down Booker Stanley on a running play near the line of scrimmage. Monty then gave Donovan a pop as the quarterback delivered a pass.
  • While playing corner, Rogers had an interception bounce out of his hands.
  • On a second-and-goal during red zone work, Stocco found Brandon Williams for a touchdown.
  • Also in the red zone segment, Tyler Donovan found Jarvis Minton for a 20-yard touchdown catch.
  • Defensive tackle Jason Chapman batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.
  • Johnny White broke up a pass on a third-and-goal from the 8.
