Minn. OL has Midwest interest

Sam Sterner, a 6-foot-4, 258-pound guard from Waconia (Minn.) High, attended the University of Minnesota scrimmage Saturday. Sterner is considered one of the top linemen in the state

Sam Sterner had a busy summer as he attended the Nike training camp in Athens, Ga. and attended several summer camps.

Sterner attended camps at Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State and South Dakota State and visited Wyoming and North Dakota State on their senior days.

Waconia had a disappointing 2-7 season last year, despite also having Joey Hiben, who signed with Notre Dame, on their roster.

Waconia opens the season at Big Lake Friday and faces Mound Westonka (whom they defeated 49-14 in their home opener last season) in its home opener Sept. 9.

Sterner also plays center on the school's basketball team that finished 22-4, losing to Benilde St. Margaret in the Section 5, Class AAA quarterfinals.

Sterner also competes in the shot put and discus and threw 40-5 1/2 in the shot and 100 feet in the discus in sectionals in the spring.

Sterner is up to 258 pounds after weighing 247 at the Minnesota football camp. He says that the teams are looking at him as an offensive guard.

Sterner has yet to receive an offer, but said that St. Cloud State might offer him soon.
