Volleyball moves up to No. 8; men's tennis results; Wisconsin/Michigan game will be replayed on ESPNU

Badger volleyball No. 8 in poll

The Wisconsin volleyball team, riding wins over Minnesota and Iowa, is No. 8 in the latest CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches Poll, which was released Monday. The No. 8 spot is the highest for the Badgers (10-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) since 2001, when they ended the season No. 7 in the nation.

Nebraska (11-0) is the top-ranked team in the nation, while Penn State (11-2) is ranked No. 4 and Minnesota fell from fifth to ninth. Ohio State (8-3) is ranked No. 18 and Purdue (11-2) is at No. 21. Illinois (10-3) is receiving votes.

Men's tennis: Badgers compete at Tom Fallon Invite

The University of Wisconsin men's tennis team competed at the Tom Fallon Invitational in South Bend, Ind., facing competition from Big Ten foes Northwestern, Michigan and Purdue, in addition to four other schools. The Badgers earned an 18-16 singles record and 5-4 doubles record.

No. 80 sophomore Jeremy Sonkin, playing at the top singles spot, notched a singles wins over Purdue but fell to players from Michigan, Notre Dame and Drake. Freshman Gian Hodgson earned a 2-2 singles record in his first matches as a Badger. Sophomores Nolan Polley and Brennen Phippen, both of whom transferred to Wisconsin, earned singles records of 3-1 each.

"Overall, it was a great weekend," Wisconsin coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "The guys were really excited to get out there and played some great matches. . . We definitely have some things to work on but we were excited about the outcome of this weekend."

ESPNU to replay Wisconsin/Michigan game

Fans wanting to relive Wisconsin's 23-20 defeat of Michigan last Saturday will have a chance to do so Tuesday at noon when ESPNU, ESPN's college sports channel, shows the game. ESPNU can be found on DIRECTV channel 609, DISH Network channel 148 and participating cable outlets.
