Football postgame notes

Notes from Wisconsin's 38-34 win over Minnesota

  • With his seven receptions for 121 yards Saturday, receiver Brandon Williams has tied Lee Evans' career school pass reception record of 175 catches.
  • Wisconsin's win marked the 23rd time in the Alvarez era that Wisconsin has fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit to win. This is the fourth time in the past five fourth-quarter comeback wins that the Badgers have defeated a top 25 team.
  • Linebacker DeAndre Levy recorded his first career fumble recovery in the waning seconds of the game Saturday, clinching Wisconsin's victory.
  • On Saturday, Joe Stellmacher recorded a career-high 14 tackles. His nine solo tackles was also a career high.
  • Roderick Rogers also recorded career highs in total tackles with 10 and solo tackles with nine. Rogers also grabbed his second career interception Saturday.
  • Sophomore cornerback Ben Strickland recorded his first points as a Badger when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to score a touchdown.
  • Badger punter Ken DeBauche averaged 46.4 yards per punt Saturday, including a long punt of 53 yards. DeBauche has averaged at least 46 yards per punt in six of Wisconsin's seven games, including two games where he averaged precisely 46.0 yards per punt and two games where he averaged 46.7 yards per punt. The only game this season in which he has not averaged at least 46 yards per punt was the Temple game, when he did not record an official punt.
  • Taylor Mehlhaff's streak of seven consecutive made field goals ended Saturday when he missed wide right from 36 yards out with 11:18 left in the first quarter. Mehlhaff made a 44-yard field goal with 6:14 left in the second quarter. He is now 9 of 11 this season.
  • Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco is now 15-4 as a starter in his career. He threw for 235 yards Saturday, making this the fifth game of his career with more than 200 passing yards.
  • This is the ninth time Wisconsin has claimed the Paul Bunyan Axe in the last 11 years.
  • Wisconsin scored 249 points all of last season and gave up 185. Through seven games this season, the Badgers have racked up 285 points but have allowed 176.
  • Saturday's attendance of 65,089 was the second-highest in Minnesota history; the game with the highest attendance was Nov. 23, 2002, when Iowa crushed Minnesota 45-21 in front of an audience of 65,184.
  • Minnesota has lost six straight games when the attendance is more than 60,000 at the Metrodome. The last time the Gophers won in the Metrodome with an attendance of more than 60,000 was against Wisconsin Oct. 23, 1993. The Gophers defeated No. 15 Wisconsin 28-21 in the Badgers' only loss of that season.
Notes from the Laurence Maroney show…

  • Maroney is the first player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. He needed 125 yards going into today's game and easily surpassed that during his 93-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
  • Maroney became the first Gopher to have three 200-yard rushing performances in the same season.
  • Maroney's 93-yard touchdown run is the second-longest in Minnesota history. Darrell Thompson holds the record with a 98-yard run against Michigan Nov. 7, 1987. The 93-yard run is also tied for the sixth-longest in Big Ten history and is tied for the fifth-longest play in school history.
  • Maroney's 258 yards were a career high and the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. Second-string tailback Gary Russell also had a career best with 139 rushing yards.
  • Maroney moved into fifth place on the school's all-time list with his 587 career rushing attempts, which includes his 43 attempts Saturday.
  • For the 19th time in his 32 games, Maroney surpassed 100 rushing yards. He has rushed for at least 100 yards six times this season and 18 times in the past 24 games. The Gophers are 16-3 in games when Maroney rushes for 100 yards or more.
  • For the fifth time this season and the 10th time in his career, Maroney met or surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark by halftime.
