Men's hockey: UW wins 1-2 showdown

No. 2 Badgers triumph in College Hockey Showcase road game with No. 1 Michigan

Senior forward Adam Burish scored the deciding goal with less than two minutes left, as the No. 2 Badger men's hockey team upset top-ranked Michigan 3-2 in Ann Arbor Saturday night.

After defeating Michigan State 3-1 in the first round of the College Hockey Showcase, the Badgers (11-1-2 overall) stormed into Yost Arena and took down the Wolverines (9-3-1), extending their unbeaten streak to 12 games, the longest current streak in the country.

Senior winger Ryan MacMurchy opened the scoring early in the second period with help from freshman forward Jack Skille and junior forward Jake Dowell; junior forward Robbie Earl added the Badgers' second goal 10 minutes later on a slap shot.

Wisconsin held its two-goal lead for just over a minute, when UM freshman forward Tim Miller notched his first goal of the season, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Early in the third period freshman forward Brandon Naurato capitalized on a Michigan 5-on-3 power play, beating Badger netminder Brian Elliott.

That paved the way for Burish's late-game goal. The captain took a pass from Earl and beat two UM defensemen on a breakaway to score on Michigan senior goalie Noah Ruden. Sophomore forward Joe Pavelski provided the other assist on the goal.

Michigan's Andrew Ebbett provided assists on both goals.

Ruden collected 24 saves for the Wolverines, while Elliott made 23 saves in helping Wisconsin to finish with a 7-0-1 record in November, the most wins in any month under head coach Mike Eaves.

Wisconsin holds a 5-0-1 record in their last six games against top-ranked teams.

Wisconsin, who will likely be No. 1 in the next poll, travels to face rival Minnesota Dec. 2-3. Both games will be shown live by Fox Sports Net North. The puck will be dropped at 7 p.m. both nights.
