Brinkley playing waiting game

St. Louis cornerback considering scholarship offers and contemplating official visits

Niles Brinkley, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback/wide receiver prospect at St. Louis Beaumont, has three certain scholarship offers, from Ball State, Miami (Ohio) and Division I-AA Alabama State.

Brinkley was offered a scholarship by Wisconsin, but with future head coach Bret Bielema reassessing the programs' offers this fall, Brinkley has been wondering what comes next.

"Wisconsin… they offered me a scholarship, but now they have to go back and revise all the scholarships they offered…," Brinkley said.

"I really don't know what to expect because the new coach coming and I don't know if he's going to fire the coach that's recruiting me. I don't know what's going on."

Brinkley was being recruiting by defensive backs coach Ron Lee. Bielema has refrained from addressing the makeup of his first coaching staff, but several published reports have intimated that Lee is not likely to be retained.

"Wisconsin was like… one of the top five schools I was considering talking to," Brinkley said. "But now that I heard about them having to renew all the scholarships I don't know what's going to happen. I have to reconsider."

Brinkley has received contact from Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota. Among major conference programs, Kansas appears to be paying him the closest attention.

"I'm trying to set up some visits," said Brinkley, who has yet to take an official visit.

"Right now I'm just like trying to narrow down to the top five schools," he said.

Brinkley said he primarily played wide receiver this season. He missed the first four games of the year after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee to remove a calcium build up.
