The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated Bemidji State 4-1 Sunday in Roseau, Minn., earning their sixth series sweep this season.
Freshman forward Angie Keseley scored first for Wisconsin (11-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 14-2-0 overall), midway through the first period. Bemidji State forward Nikki Eckebrecht notched a goal a minute later.
Senior forward Nikki Burish scored the game-winner late in the first period, putting Wisconsin up 2-1.
Wisconsin's third and fourth goals came early in the third period. Senior forward Sharon Cole notched a goal on a power play just 38 seconds into the third period and freshman forward Erika Lawler notched the fourth goal less than two minutes later.
Wisconsin outshot Bemidji State 34-27 but the Beavers (3-11-2, 2-10-0) took 14 shots to the Badgers' seven in the second period.
Badger redshirt freshman goalie Jessie Vetter started her first college game and made 26 saves. Sophomore Emily Brookshaw stopped 30 shots for the Beavers.
Former Badger defender Sis Paulsen is in her second year as an assistant coach at Bemidji State.
Wisconsin visits No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth Dec. 9-10. The Badgers fell 5-2 to the Bulldogs in Madison in their season opener but came back to defeat UMD 4-3 the next day.
Wisconsin fourth in Directors' Cup
Wisconsin is fourth with 134 points in the initial 2005-06 Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, which were released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Wisconsin's men's cross country team earned 100 points by winning the national title Nov. 21 and the women's cross country earned 34 points with its 20th place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Stanford, which has won the cup 11 times, is in first with 172 points, after the Cardinal women's cross country team won the national title and the men placed sixth. Colorado (165 points), Notre Dame (154) and Duke (130) round out the top five.
The ranking includes men's and women's cross country and field hockey. The next rankings are due out Dec. 15, Dec. 29 and Jan. 10.
Men's cross country: Championship to be broadcast on FSN
The men's and women's cross country championships will be televised Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Net North. The Badger men's cross country team won the national championship Nov. 21.
Volleyball: Time set for regional match
The 11th seeded Wisconsin volleyball team (25-6) will face No. 6 Notre Dame (30-3) Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. on the Texas A&M campus in an NCAA Tournament College Station regional semifinal. The winner of that game will face the winner of No. 3 Washington (28-1) and No. 14 Purdue (25-8) Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. for a trip to the Final Four.
