Josh Brent: An uncle's advice

Defensive tackle Josh Brent (6-3, 300, 5.0) from Central Catholic High School in Bloomington (Ill.) denies a leader.

"I know that if I start favoring a school now, I will be biased when I go to other campuses," said the four-star prospect. "I don't want to be comparing schools; I want to see them for what they are. My uncle has been like my father figure, and he also thinks I should stay open-minded through my recruiting. He's helped me to be the person I am today, so I listen to his advice.

"I went to Michigan's camp on Tuesday (June 20). The coaches liked that I am very persistent and my quickness off the ball. The campus was compacted so the classes aren't all two miles apart. I liked that everything was in walking distance," he said.

"I was timed for my 40, and I got a 5.2 because they use electric timers and those are very precise. I paid attention to the defensive line coach (Steve Stripling) because he'd be the one I'd spend the most time with. It's not just a job to him; he's passionate and has fun being a coach. I would like to visit Michigan again in July with my uncle.

"Iowa's camp was last Saturday (June 17). I had visited before to watch one of their spring practices. I know more about the school now, but nothing really stood out to me. The coaches gave me the same compliments as Michigan's coaches, saying that I'm the type of player they need," Brent said.

"I've been to Illinois many times because it's a short drive away; and I know everything I need to know about them. I've gotten to know the defensive line coach, Tom Sims. He's probably my favorite because he's a lot like me. We grew up in the same urban background so we have a lot in common.

"I've haven't been home much for the past two weeks because of camps and conditioning with my football team," he said. "I plan to visit Wisconsin and Missouri, too, sometime this summer. They are some of the only schools that have offered me that I can visit without having to spend an extravagant amount of money on a plane ticket," said Brent, who claims to have 13 offers.

"When I evaluate all my options, I'll be looking mostly at the defensive line coach, the time in between classes on campus, and if the university has good academic advisors."

Brent reports a 2.3 core GPA and a 21 ACT score.
