Badger Coaching Staff Returns

With fall camp just one week away, the UW football coaching staff returned to work after a brief, well-deserved vacation for a staff meeting Sunday afternoon. The Badger staff will spend this week making last minute preparations for fall camp, which begins July 29 at the O'Connor Center in Madison.

After some well-deserved time off, the Wisconsin football coaching staff returned to work Sunday, kicking off the fall with a full staff meeting. The Badger staff will spend the rest of this week preparing for the beginning of fall camp. Freshmen report July 29, while the veterans return August 1. The first full team practice will take place the afternoon of August 2, immediately following the team's Media Day at the O'Connor Center in Madison.

Following spring football, the staff spent the month of May recruiting, visiting schools and athletes in their respective territories. The month of June was spent analyzing spring practices and planning for the fall, while running the annual summer camps in Madison.

First-year Special Teams Coach Brian Murphy talked about the process of preparing for fall practices this summer.

"After spring football, I went back and broke down all of the film from the spring, and just started to take another look at everything we did, top to bottom," Murphy said. "We started with four deep in the depth chart, took a look at personnel, who was going to fit. Then we took a look at everything we were doing and essentially started from the bottom again and really highlighted the points that worked out, both drill-wise, scheme-wise and those things.

"I highlighted the things we liked and kind of added onto those things, and then the drills that I didn't think were very effective or very time-effective, we kind of moved off to the side. We just went through those again and put together our installation for the fall."

The majority of the staff has been on vacation throughout the past 3-4 weeks, although most coaches popped their heads in and out of the office throughout that time. But now, the gauntlet has begun. It's full speed ahead from here until the end of the season.

While the coaches are working extremely hard this week, the players will see their offseason conditioning taper off a little bit this week, to assure everyone is 100 percent for the beginning of the grueling two-a-day schedule.

The first edition of Badger Nation Magazine will include a feature on the Wisconsin summer conditioning program. We are now accepting orders on this website for the brand-new magazine, which will be available next week.
