One of the top high school teams in the nation this season is Jefferson High School in Tampa, FL. It is located minutes from the airport in Tampa, and it's been somewhat of a one-stop shopping location for college coaches across the nation. Wisconsin has offered scholarships to five Tampa Jefferson seniors.
And one of them currently has the Badgers in his top five. Running back/linebacker Josh Balloon said the combination of Wisconsin's running back tradition and vet medicine program has him heavily considering the program.
"I know all about their running backs like Ron Dayne and Michael Bennett," said Balloon. And I know they are a good academic program. My dad and I look around on the computer a lot, and we looked at the top three (vet medicine) programs. It was Florida, Auburn, and Wisconsin was right up there."
The 6-foot, 200-pound Balloon said his top five right now are Wisconsin, Northwestern (offered), Florida, Florida State and Miami. He went to camp at Auburn and lists them in his top 10, and he will visit FSU later this summer with his good friend and fellow UW recruit Rashaun Grant.
Balloon said he doesn't have much of a preference which position he plays in college, but his favorite is running back. He wants to commit to a program that loves to run the ball. Playing for a program like Tampa Jefferson has given him a ton of exposure to college recruiters.
"When all of us came aboard, we were starting as freshmen," Balloon said. "I kind of knew it was going to be something special in a couple of seasons."
Balloon said he hasn't been offered by the three Florida schools, but he is in constant contact with their coaches. He's unsure about when he will make a decision.
"The most important thing is, I'm a Christian. I have to pray about it," Balloon said. "After that, it's academics, and I'll let the rest fall in line."
