Picture this: Big Ten Week 1 Predictions

BN photo-journalist Neil Ament takes a still shot of Big Ten Week One football. Read who he thinks will be the big winner.

Ohio State vs. Northern Illinois. There are four Big Ten teams playing in the state of Ohio this opening week. One will lose, but it won't be the Buckeyes. I do think this game will be closer than the three scores Vegas has it as I write this (Tuesday). Way too much fire power in all three on the field units for tOSU. Ginn may outscore the Huskies himself. Ohio State

Minnesota v. Kent State. The Big Ten MAC tour continues with the Gophers playing a true road game in Kent Ohio. Not feeling like doing any research on this game, I'll go by historical trends. It wouldn't be any fun not having the Goofs' faithful (all 23 of them) undefeated and talking titles when the games that really count start. No way Glen Mason loses to the team where he started. Minnesota

Wisconsin vs. Bowling Green. The Badgers play a road game at a school that has received a NCAA letter warning about low attendance???? Not this year (and hopefully never) Cleveland here we come!!! Last year the Badgers fell behind big early. This won't happen this year. The secret we all know is about to be let out of the bag. This year's defense may be better than Bielema's first year in Madison. Stocco may play, but he won't be needed. Wisconsin

Northwestern vs. Miami (Ohio). It might look like the Hurricanes to the Wildcats when it is all said and done. There will be lots of Randy Walker tributes and distractions that will hurt the Wildcats in the end. Walker put Oxford on the football map in the 90s. The Red Hawks are a good team that runs a similar offense to Northwestern. They will be ready for it. I wish Pat Fitzgerald all the success he can find, but let's face it he has been running the Mildcat defense lately. Miami

Western Michigan vs. Indiana This will be the best game of the week. The Broncos have a very good defensive backfield and the Hoosiers have the most underrated passing attack in the Big Ten this year. I'm not just talking about Hardy either. Quarterback Blake Powers is tough and good. If Indiana can develop any kind of running game, they will go bowling this year. First they must beat a tough Bronco team, though. Indiana

Michigan vs. Vanderbilt. This weeks SAT Bowl (at least for the student bodies). If we're talking about personal portfolios of the players 25 years after graduation, I'm going with the Commodores, since it's football…… Michigan

Penn State vs. Akron. Akron is my favorite MAC program. Penn State has to replace a bunch of firepower, but their D will carry them at times this season. This game will be close though. I don't bet on college football anymore, but if I did, I like the Zips to cover the two plus TDs they are getting. Penn State

Michigan State vs. Idaho AYFKM?!?! How will this cupcake help Sparty get ready for their 2nd biggest game of the year? Of course, I'm referring to Notre Dame. Time keepers, DSBL, etc. will be necessary to keep JLS off his cell phone during the second half of this yawner. Michigan State

Iowa vs. Montana

AYFKM II ?!?!?! We all know that the Hawkeyes never lose at home. Or maybe it's only five visitors have ever won at Kinnick….. Or maybe, it's 4….. Or maybe it's 6???? Either way, the Grizzlies are no Iowa State. When I have to google a team to find out their nickname, there is no way they will win at Iowa City. Iowa

Purdue vs. Indiana State Tiller has a bunch to prove this year. Never in my life have I seen a team fall apart after one play as the Boilermakers did after Orton's fumble two years ago. The hangover has remained to this day. As much as I'd love to pick ISU…. Purdue

Illinois vs. Eastern Illinois This game doesn't merit any comment and I've already spent too much time on this week's predictions. Illinois
