Florida DE Talks Badgers Official Visit

Anthony Mains, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound, defensive end, from Naples (Fla.) Golden Gate, was in Madison this past weekend for his official visit. Mains was in town with his parents and was hosted by James Stallons and Mickey Turner. Is Mains a Badger yet? Look inside.

"This my first experience in Madison and I loved it." Anthony Mains told Badger Nation. "My parents came with me and we all had the best time. I arrived on Friday morning and we were taken to lunch. After lunch we went to our hotel and dropped our bags.

"I plan on majoring in business, so I met with some of the professors in the business schools as well as a few academic advisors. From there I got my first Camp Randall experience as I watched the team go through some walk-through stuff on Friday night.

"Friday night I just hung out with my hosts. I met a lot of the guys on the team. We walked around town and campus which was cool. I slept in on Saturday morning and had breakfast around 11am.

"I just relaxed in my room until they came and got me early Saturday afternoon. From there it was more campus tour stuff and we finally got over to the stadium to watch pre-game warm-ups.

"The game was incredible. My hat goes off the student section. That was the most coordinated student section I've ever seen. Of course everyone talks about the "Jump Around" and that has become a legendary thing. All-in-all it was a great visit."

Did Mains give Wisconsin his verbal commitment?

"I didn't commit," Mains said. "I'm going to Stanford (9-28) for an official visit this coming weekend. I've also been to Central Florida (9-14). After I go to Stanford, I don't know when or if I'll take another visit.

"Right now I'd say that Wisconsin, South Florida and Central Florida are my top three. Tennessee would also be up there but they haven't offered me yet. I don't know when I'll be making a decision."

If the Badgers are lucky enough to sign Mains come February, it could be because of a conversation Anthony had with a couple of current Badger football players.

"Aaron Henry and Culmer St. Jean had a very good talk with me." Mains said.

"Obviously Wisconsin isn't as close as Central Florida or South Florida but I had a great official visit to Wisconsin. Aaron and Culmer both told me that leaving home was tough for the first month but once they got used to being in Madison they never wanted to leave."

Mains had 67 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a junior. He received several honors including All-Area, All-Conference and team defensive player-of-the-year.
