Lewis: Oh Bret! The Places You Will Go

After having his car break down on the way to State College and his day most likely worse than yours, Badger Nation's Matt Lewis, with the help of Dr. Suess, decides to make everyone feel better with his Ode to Coach Bielema.

"Been there, done that."

-Bret Bielema, as relayed by Erin Andrews following halftime of the Wisconsin-Illinois football game, referring to the Badgers' deficit. Bielema, then 17-1, had lost only one career game as head coach, to a superior team in a game Wisconsin was not expected to win. Just over seven days later, Bielema would find himself in the first losing streak of his young coaching career.

Congratulations! --------- Though today's not your day. ---------- You're off to new places! ---------- You're off and away!

You have losses in red --------- Not just W's You can learn how to rebound --------- Then you'll know that too. --------- You're on your own. And you know what to know. --------- And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down depth charts. And injured reserves. --------- About some you will say, "He's young. He will learn." ---------With your head full of brains but the taste of defeat --------- You will have to decide how to deal with your D.

And you may not find any, --------- Any help on third downs --------- With no loud faithful red --------- In these scary road towns

It's scarier there

In the hostile air.

Out there bad breaks can happen --------- And frequently do --------- To people as lucky --------- And blessed as you.

And when things start to happen, --------- Don't worry. Don't stew. --------- Just hope you have answers. --------- As we will hope too.

You'll be on your way back up! --------- You've seen all the sights! --------- You climbed up the rankings ---------Then fell out of sight.

You might lag behind, you don't have the speed --------- Or maybe the tackling is your greatest need.--------- But every season, you'll be the best of the best --------- Whoever you'll face, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't

Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so --------- But sadly, it's true --------- And Hang-ups --------- Will happen to you.

You can get all hung up --------- By Morelli and Juice --------- Your O will turn over ---------And sometimes you lose

You'll come down from the loss ---------With an unpleasant bump --------- And the chances are, then --------- That you'll be in … a Slump!!

And when you're in a slump, --------- You're not in for much fun --------- For pleasing the fan base --------- Is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.

Your mentor might help but the pathway is dark.

A place you could tumble in an open Big Ten!

Do you dare shake things up? How to rally your men?

How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you get down, should you rush left or right…

Or find the hot wideout? Or, maybe, not quite?

Or rush ‘round the end? A sweep from behind?

Simple it's not, facing blitz you will find,

For a wounded young offense to make up its mind.

You can get so confused --------- That you'll start in to race --------- Down long field possessions with point gaps to replace --------- And grind on for yards across dangerous space, --------- Only to give up more by the end of the chase

…for they are just waiting

Watching the BCS train go --------- And for buses to come, to some now unknown bowl ---------Or the Wolverines to come, or down to Ohio -------- Or even the Hoosiers when Homecoming shows --------- Just waiting around for a yes or a no ---------Just where do we stand, nobody knows.

Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for LB's to finish their bite

Or waiting for that long gone preseason foresight

Or waiting for Lance Smith on Saturday night

Or waiting, perhaps, for their one true field leader

A man who in hard times will not fizzle and peter

Or a string of luck, or a rare interception

Or a defensive stand in a big time possession

Everyone is just waiting.

That man could be you!

Somehow you'll escape --------- All that worry and fret --------- You'll find the bright places --------- Or we hope you will yet

With a banner flap-flapping

You could once more fly to the sky!

Ready for wins over teams ranked more high

Ready, we hope, cause you're that kind of guy!

Oh the places you (might) go! There is fun to be done!

There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.

And the magical things you can do with the ball

Will make you the winningest winner of all.

Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be,

With the whole world watching, not whispering "Barry."

Except when they don't.

Because sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times --------- You'll play lonely games too. --------- Games you can't win --------- Cause you'll play against you.

All alone! --------- Whether you like it or not --------- Alone will be something --------- You'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance

You'll meet complaining that bothers you out your khaki pants!

There are some, down the road to January and beyond

That could get on your nerves but you've got to go on

And on you will go --------- Though the weather be foul --------- On you will go --------- Though your enemies prowl --------- On you will go --------- Though the downers will scowl

Onward up many --------- A frightening creek --------- Though your depth chart is sore --------- And your run stopping weak

On and on you will hike --------- And I hope you'll hike far --------- And face up these problems --------- All that they are

You'll get mixed up, of course, --------- As you already know --------- You'll get mixed up --------- By elders with years in the hole

So be sure where you step --------- Step with care and great tact --------- And remember that coaching's a balancing act

Just never forget to be dexterous and deft

And never mix up your right foot with your left

And will you succeed?

We hope so indeed!

(Though nothing in this game is quite guaranteed).

Be your name Bielema or Barry or Bo

Or Lloyd Carr or Tressel or Joe Paterno,

You've reached some great places

Though not here today

But your mountain is waiting

So get on your way.

Oh Bret, the places we HOPE that you'll go!
